Kalimas Harbour

Kalimas is the old traditional harbour on the Mas River, just north of the Red Bridge, and one of the great surviving scenes of traditional Indonesian seafaring. Dozens of Bugis pinisi — the distinctive double-masted wooden schooners — tie up here to load and unload cargo destined for islands across the archipelago.

The activity peaks in the early morning, when crews work on the decks and goods are shifted by hand. Visitors are generally welcome to walk along the quay, though the footing is uneven and it can get busy. Photography is fine but ask before pointing a camera at anyone. The harbour is a genuine working port, not a tourist attraction, which is precisely what makes it worth the visit.

A story
The pinisi schooners docked at Kalimas are identical in design to those that have worked Indonesia's inter-island trade routes for four hundred years. Bugis sailors from Sulawesi have dominated this trade since the 17th century — they were so feared as pirates by European colonizers that "boogeyman" in English is thought to derive from "Bugis man."
