Ogaki

Gifu water city where Basho ended his Narrow Road journey beside castle canals.

Ogaki is a castle and canal city in Gifu Prefecture, west of Nagoya and close to the Sekigahara pass. It is not one of Japan's great old towns, but it has a clear identity: water, lowland castle history, and Matsuo Basho, who ended the journey later published as The Narrow Road to the Deep North here.

The centre is easy to handle on foot. Ogaki Castle is a reconstruction, but it anchors the old town, while the Funamachi canal and Oku no Hosomichi memorial give the city a literary reason to matter. In spring, the canal-side cherry blossoms make the Basho connection feel less like a plaque and more like a real place.

Ogaki is best as a half-day or easy day trip from Nagoya, Gifu, or Hikone. It will not replace Kyoto or Takayama, but for travelers interested in Basho, Sekigahara-era history, or quieter castle towns, it clears the bar.
