Arasan Baths

The Arasan Baths are Almaty's finest public bathhouse, occupying a large domed building opposite Panfilov Park. Three distinct bathing traditions are offered under one roof: the Russian banya with its rolling steam, the Finnish sauna with dry heat, and a Turkish hammam with heated stone platforms at varying temperatures. All three share a cold plunge pool.

A visit to Arasan is genuinely pleasurable and not merely a tourist curiosity — Almaty residents of all ages use it regularly. Various massage treatments are available for an additional fee. Single-session tickets cover both the banya and the sauna; the hammam is separate. Towels and bath sheets can be rented at the desk. The baths are busiest on weekends; weekday mornings are quieter. Address: Tolebi 113, corner of Kunayev.

A story
The Arasan complex was built in 1982 as one of the Soviet Union's most ambitious public bathhouse projects — designed not just as a place to wash but as a social institution where Almaty's citizens of all nationalities would mingle. The three baths under one roof (Russian banya, Finnish sauna, Turkish hammam) reflect the city's multinational character, and the tradition of mixing all three in a single visit, moving between wet heat, dry heat, and cold plunge, is something locals still practice meticulously.
