Medeu Ice Rink

Medeu is the world's highest ice rink, sitting at 1,691 metres above sea level in the Medeu Valley, about 15 kilometres south of central Almaty. On a clear day, the view from the rink toward the surrounding Tien Shan peaks is spectacular, and the sheer scale of the structure — built in Soviet times and expanded for international competition — is impressive even if you have no interest in skating.

In winter, the ice is open to the public for recreational skating; skate hire is available. The rink closes on Tuesdays for maintenance. In summer, the ice melts and the stadium hosts other events. Above the rink, a massive flood-control dam separates the valley; climbing the 842 steps to the top of the dam is a popular exercise route for Almaty residents. From Medeu, a cable car and ski lift system leads up to the Shymbulak ski resort, a further 1,000 metres in altitude. Bus from the city centre runs regularly along Dostyk Avenue.

A story
More than 180 world records in speed skating were set at Medeu during the Soviet era, more than at any other rink in the world. The altitude — 1,691 metres above sea level — means thinner air, less wind resistance, and faster ice. The Soviet sports machine exploited this ruthlessly, sending athletes here for altitude training and record-breaking attempts. The stadium became a source of enormous national pride for Kazakhstan, and the records still stand on its roll of honour.
