The Military History Museum sits on the right bank, in a low purpose-built complex with an extensive outdoor display of tanks, helicopters, jet fighters, and other Soviet and post-Soviet hardware. The indoor galleries cover the history of Kazakh military formations from the late Russian Empire through the Soviet period and into the modern Kazakhstani armed forces.
The outdoor park is the more interesting part for non-specialists — children love the tanks and the open cockpits of the fighter planes. The museum is free to enter the grounds; small fees for the indoor exhibits. About an hour is plenty.
