The National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan opened in 2014 in a striking modern building near the Hazret Sultan Mosque. It is the largest museum in Central Asia by floor area and covers Kazakh history from prehistoric kurgans through the Silk Road, the Russian Empire, the Soviet period, and the post-1991 republic. The collection is genuinely impressive — particularly the archaeology galleries and the hall dedicated to the famous Golden Man.
The Hall of Modern Art and the Hall of Independence are heavily weighted toward state narrative and the achievements of the Nazarbayev era, which gives a particular flavour of contemporary Kazakhstan even if the curating is uncritical. Allow at least two hours; the cafe inside is decent. English-language audio guides are available; signage is bilingual.
