Mängilik El Triumphal Arch

The Mängilik El (Eternal Country) Triumphal Arch is a 20-metre stone arch at the southern entrance to the city, on the road in from the airport. It was completed in 2011 and is the obvious first landmark for anyone arriving by ground transfer. The design is straightforward neoclassical — three openings, columns, friezes of Kazakh national symbols — but the scale and the position on the steppe horizon give it a real ceremonial presence.

Worth a stop briefly if you are passing or as part of a wider drive along the southern boulevards. Not a destination in itself; combine with the Hazret Sultan Mosque or the National Museum, both of which are a short distance back toward the centre.
