Choon Hui Café

Famous for kolo mee and Sarawak laksa, a local institution for decades

Choon Hui Café on Jalan Ban Hock is one of Kuching's most consistently recommended spots for Sarawak laksa and kolo mee. The café is a classic Chinese coffee shop: plastic chairs, formica tables, fans overhead, no air conditioning. The laksa — a complex coconut and tamarind broth with vermicelli, prawns, chicken, and bean sprouts — is made from a base that takes hours to prepare, and the result is significantly more nuanced than most versions served elsewhere.

Open from early morning until early afternoon. Arrive before 9am for the best selection and to avoid queuing. On Jalan Ban Hock in the Padungan area, about 10 minutes' walk from the waterfront.
