Sacred Garden

The southernmost of the three planned zones, containing Lumbini's actual archaeological core — the Mayadevi Temple, the Ashoka Pillar, the Puskarini Pond, the foundations of devotional stupas built by pilgrims over many centuries, and the excavated brick mounds of ancient monasteries.

The Sacred Garden is fenced and quiet, with peacocks and storks wandering the lawns. Entry from the main central canal at the south end; shoes must be removed at the temple. Allow at least 90 minutes to walk the whole garden and read the excavation panels. The mood is genuinely sacred rather than touristic; behave accordingly.
