The Jeongja coast along Ulsan’s northeast shore is more about atmosphere than sunbathing. Gangdong Beach stretches out in striking black pebbles, backed by a rugged coastline that feels surprisingly remote given how close the city is. Come for the moody scenery and windswept walks, not for a typical beach day.
Nearby Jeongja Harbour is worth the stop. Coloured lighthouses frame a lively fish market where tanks overflow with everything pulled from the waters just offshore. The sashimi eateries here are the best bet for a meal.
The whole area works well as an afternoon drive, ideally combined with the coastal road between Ulsan and Busan. Getting there by bus: take No. 102, 112, or 1402 to Hyomun Sageori, then transfer to No. 137 or 411 to Jeongja.
