Ulsan

South Korean industrial city on the East Sea, anchored by Hyundai shipyards, factories, and river parks.

Ulsan is South Korea's industrial powerhouse -- home to Hyundai's car factories and shipyards, the city hums with manufacturing energy that most tourists never see. With a population of over a million, it is the country's seventh-largest city, sprawling across a wide valley between mountains and the East Sea coast.

What Ulsan lacks in UNESCO sites it makes up for in character. The city is a patchwork of distinct districts: the commercial buzz of Samsandong and Seongnamdong, the university energy of Mugeodong, and the expat-friendly pockets of Bangeojin near the Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard. The Taehwa River cuts through the centre, flanked by bamboo groves where migratory birds gather each winter.

There are genuine highlights if you look. The Bangudae Petroglyphs — Bronze Age rock carvings of whales and animals, among the oldest in the world — sit in a valley west of the city. Ulgi and Daewangam Park on the coast are striking, as is the Ulsan Museum beside Ulsan Grand Park. The twelve scenic areas catalogued by the tourist board range from mountain summits to the night view of the industrial complex -- an oddly beautiful carpet of lights seen from Mt. Muryongsan. Mt. Gajisan, the tallest peak in the area at 1,240 metres, offers the peninsula's earliest sunrise.

Ulsan also works well as a base. Gyeongju, the ancient Silla capital with its temples and burial mounds, is barely an hour north. Busan, Korea's second city with its famous Haeundae beach, is about the same distance south. The beaches closer to home are honestly not Korea's finest, but they offer a window into local beach culture that is entertaining in its own right.

The food scene covers most cuisines if you know where to look, and the bar scene has enough variety to keep expats and visitors happy. Ulsan is not glamorous, but it is real -- a working Korean city where the welcome is warm and the cost of living is lower than Seoul or Busan.
