Ulsan Grand Park

South Korea's largest urban park, built on a former oil refinery site

At 3.7 square kilometres, Ulsan Grand Park is the largest urban park in South Korea — larger than Central Park in New York, a fact Ulsan residents will mention with quiet pride. The grounds include a rose garden with over 4,000 varieties, a butterfly house, a petting zoo, an arboretum, cycle paths, and several large ponds. On weekends it fills with families; on weekday mornings it is peaceful enough for a proper walk.

The park makes a natural companion to the nearby Ulsan Museum, and the two together fill a good half-day. Rental bikes and electric cars are available near the main entrance. The butterfly house is worth a visit even if you have no particular interest in insects — the humid, tropical greenhouse environment is striking given the industrial surroundings just outside the park gates. Cycle hire costs around 3,000 won per hour.

A story
The park was built on land reclaimed from the SK Energy oil refinery — the company donated the site to the city as a condition of its expansion. Ulsan residents now cycle and picnic where oil tanks once stood, a transformation that captures something essential about how the city thinks about itself.
