The Taipei City government has invested heavily in turning the floodplains of the Tamsui, Keelung, and Xindian rivers into a continuous network of paved bike paths. The result is one of the most extensive urban cycling networks in Asia: over 100 kilometres of riverside paths, separated from traffic, looping around the city centre and out to Tamsui in the north, Wugu in the west, and Bitan in the south.
The YouBike city bike-share scheme, with docks every few hundred metres in central Taipei, makes use easy and cheap; the rivergates from the city into the floodplain are at points along Civic Boulevard, Keelung Road, and other arterials. Three or four hours' ride to Bitan and back, with a swim at the suspension-bridge pool at the end, is a good day out.
