A few blocks south of Ximending in the old Wanhua district, the Bopiliao block is a half-restored stretch of narrow shophouse alleys preserving a mix of late-Qing-era, Japanese colonial, and 1960s Taipei urban fabric. The buildings — brick, timber, tiled roofs — were rescued from demolition in the early 2000s and converted into a small museum complex and exhibition space dedicated to the history of the surrounding Wanhua neighbourhood.
The block has been used as a film set many times (notably for the gangster film Monga), and the alley walls carry a rotating programme of murals. Free entry. Combine it with Longshan Temple just to the south.
