Dushanbe Flagpole

In front of the Palace of Nations, the colossal Tajik flagpole has become one of the defining images of post-independence Dushanbe. The national flag flying from the top is enormous — visible from much of the city on clear days. The flagpole and the surrounding garden are a popular evening destination for local families.

The scale of the thing is genuinely impressive in person, and the Park of the Flagpole around it is pleasant. It captures something about Tajikistan's post-Soviet national assertion: a country that emerged from a brutal civil war in the 1990s, now presenting itself to the world with this outsized monument. Worth a look even if monumental architecture isn't your thing.

A story
When the Dushanbe Flagpole was completed in 2011, it stood 165 meters tall — briefly the tallest flagpole in the world. It held the record for about three years before Azerbaijan built a taller one in Baku. Tajikistan's is still the second-tallest free-standing flagpole on earth, flying a flag that measures 30 by 60 meters and weighs 700 kilograms. On windy days the flag sounds like distant thunder.
