Hisar Fortress

Hisar Fortress, 30 kilometers west of Dushanbe, is the most popular day excursion from the capital. The 18th-century fortification complex includes a massive gateway tower (the most intact structure), two madrasas (religious schools), a caravanserai, and the ruins of the palace complex on the hill above. The setting, on a low ridge above the Kafirnigan River valley, has good views.

The archaeological museum on the grounds has artifacts from the region spanning the Bronze Age to the medieval period. The site is well-signposted and easy to explore independently in two to three hours. From Dushanbe, shared taxis run from the Hisor stand near the north bus terminal; a private taxi from the center takes about 45 minutes.

A story
Hisar Fortress was the seat of the Bek of Bukhara's local representative — the last functioning feudal stronghold in the region before the Soviet takeover in 1920. When the Red Army captured the fort, the Bek (Amir Ibrahim Bek) fled to Afghanistan, where he continued raiding Soviet territory with basmachi fighters for over a decade. The gate tower and the surrounding ruins are the last traces of that world.
