One of the most venerated temples in the Ayutthaya area, and one of the oldest, predating the kingdom itself by 26 years. The temple sits on the Chao Phraya River just south of the island, near the point where Chinese and Japanese merchants once had their trading settlements.
The main attraction is the massive seated Buddha, 19 metres tall and covered in gold leaf, filling almost the entire viharn. Chinese script on the walls and the influence of Chinese Buddhist aesthetics reflect the historical Chinese merchant community that worshipped here. The temple draws serious Buddhist pilgrims from across Thailand and from the overseas Chinese diaspora, and the atmosphere is devotional rather than touristic.
