Wat Suwan Dararam sits near the southeast edge of Ayutthaya island, away from the densest knot of headline ruins. The temple is still active, so it feels different from the broken brick monasteries that dominate most itineraries: white walls, red roofs, gilded details, and monks moving through a compound that has not become purely archaeological.
The reason to come is the mural painting inside the ordination hall. Scenes from the Buddha's life and from Thai history cover the walls in vivid, courtly detail, rewarding slow looking more than quick photography. It is a good second-wave stop after the famous ruins, especially if you want to understand Ayutthaya as a living religious city rather than only a fallen capital.
