Wat Thammikarat

Lion guardians and a peaceful ruin just outside the main park boundary

Just outside the Ayutthaya Historical Park boundary, near U-Thong Road. The ruins are centered on a tall, crumbling Khmer-style prang surrounded by lion statues — over 200 of them, most headless, arranged around the base. The effect is both eerie and compelling.

Wat Thammikarat sees a fraction of the visitors that crowd Wat Mahathat, even though it is just as old and arguably more atmospheric. A large bodhi tree has grown through the ruins. Thai Buddhist communities use the site regularly for religious ceremonies.
