The King Ramkhamhaeng Monument stands near the centre of Sukhothai Historical Park. The seated bronze figure honours the 13th-century ruler traditionally credited with expanding Sukhothai's power and shaping the early Thai script.
It is a natural pause while cycling or walking between the main temple ruins. The monument is less atmospheric than the ancient wats, but it helps explain why Sukhothai carries such weight in Thai national history.
