Akşehir

Anatolian Lakes District town identified with Nasreddin Hoca and a compact Seljuk-Ottoman core

Akşehir sits in Turkey's Lakes District, west of Konya, with the dry Anatolian plateau behind it and old streets gathered below the hills. It is not a grand stop, but it has one thing most towns would envy: a folk hero of its own.

Nasreddin Hoca, the wise fool of countless stories, is claimed here with a tomb, statues, jokes, and a festival each July. Whether he lived exactly as tradition says is less important than the way the town has made him its public face. Around his tomb are Seljuk and Ottoman fragments, old mosques, small museums, and the former Western Front headquarters from the Turkish War of Independence.

Akşehir works best as a half-day or overnight stop between Konya, Afyon, and the lake country. Come for the Hoca story, then wander the compact centre; the reward is local texture rather than blockbuster monuments.
