The great basalt circuit dates to Roman times and was expanded by Byzantine, Arab, and Ottoman rulers. You can walk stretches of the top, most accessibly near the Dağ Kapı (north gate). The full circuit is about 6km; pick up a section and walk south for views over the Tigris valley. Several of the towers have been restored and are open to climb.
Diyarbakır City Walls
UNESCO-listed 6km basalt circuit with 82 towers, walkable in sections
A story
The walls contain 82 towers, each historically maintained by a different guild or neighbourhood — a system that kept them in repair for over a thousand years. The UNESCO listing in 2015 also covered the hevsel bahçeleri, the ancient terraced gardens below, which have been cultivated continuously since at least the Neolithic.
