One of the oldest mosques in Anatolia, the Great Mosque was built in 1091 on the site of an earlier Byzantine church — you can still see Syrian and Byzantine architectural elements incorporated into the courtyard. The striped stonework (alternating black basalt and white limestone) became the defining style of Diyarbakır's religious architecture. The courtyard is quiet and shaded; non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times.
