Mevlana Square is the great open space at the heart of pilgrim Konya, ringed on its eastern side by the green-tiled Mevlana Museum and on its northern side by the Ottoman Selimiye Mosque. The square is paved in pale stone, planted with rose beds, and ringed by benches and tea kiosks; on summer evenings it fills with families taking the air, children running in the fountain spray, and pilgrims arriving from out of town.
It is the right place to begin or end a tour of central Konya — the major sights are within a few minutes' walk in any direction, and the silhouette of the Mevlana shrine against the setting sun is one of the standard sights of the city.
