Sahib Ata Complex

Late-Seljuk mosque, dervish lodge and mausoleum built by a powerful vizier

The Sahib Ata Külliyesi is a Seljuk religious complex commissioned in the 1270s by Sahib Ata Fahreddin Ali, the same vizier who built the İnce Minareli Medrese. The complex originally comprised a mosque, a dervish lodge (hanikah), a mausoleum, and a public bath, of which the bath and parts of the lodge survive.

The mosque has been heavily rebuilt, but its monumental brick portal, with elaborate stone and faïence tile decoration, is a fine example of late-thirteenth-century Seljuk style — the period when stonework was loosening from rigid geometry into something more fluid. The türbe beside it holds Sahib Ata's own tomb. The dervish lodge, behind the mosque, was one of the early centres of the Mevlevi order. The associated Sahip Ata Museum displays the lodge interior and a collection of artefacts from the period.
