Konya Tropical Butterfly Garden

Largest butterfly conservatory in Europe, on the northern edge of the city

The Konya Tropical Butterfly Garden — Konya Tropikal Kelebek Bahçesi — opened in 2015 and is one of the largest tropical butterfly conservatories in Europe. The complex consists of a single huge glass dome filled with tropical plants, kept at constant high temperature and humidity, and several thousand free-flying butterflies of fifteen or so species at any given time, mostly from Costa Rica and the Philippines.

It is unashamedly a family attraction, and a successful one. The associated insect museum has displays of beetles, scorpions, stick insects and a small aquarium. A pleasant park with shaded benches surrounds the dome. Allow about two hours; entry includes both the butterfly hall and the insect museum. Easiest reached by taxi from the centre.
