Sırçalı Medrese

Thirteenth-century 'Glazed' madrasa, now Konya's tombstone museum

The Sırçalı Medrese — the "Glazed Madrasa" — was built in 1242 as a theological school and takes its name from the elaborate tile decoration of its main iwan. The building is smaller and less elaborate than Karatay or İnce Minareli, but the surviving glazed tilework on the iwan is among the earliest large-scale Seljuk tile schemes in Turkey and an important transitional piece between Persian and Anatolian decorative traditions.

The complex now houses the city's Museum of Tombstones, with hundreds of carved gravestones from the Seljuk and Ottoman periods. It is more interesting than it sounds — the stones range from elaborate medieval markers with inscriptions and carved cypress trees to nineteenth-century markers showing the deceased's profession in stone. Closed Mondays.
