Qosh Madrassah

Pair of facing 16th-century madrasas west of Bukhara's busiest monument circuit

Qosh Madrassah is a paired ensemble rather than a single monument: two 16th-century madrasas facing each other across a narrow street. The Modari Khan Madrasa was built for Abdullah Khan II's mother, while the later Abdullah Khan Madrasa answers it from the opposite side, turning the lane into a small architectural stage.

It sits away from the most crowded axis around Lyabi-Hauz and the Kalon complex, which makes it useful when Bukhara starts to feel too polished. The tilework is quieter than the city's headline monuments, but the composition is elegant and the empty space between the two facades is the reason to come.
