Museum of Applied Arts

Decorative arts museum housed in the Islam Khoja Madrasah, with carpets, silver, copper, and textiles

The Museum of Applied Arts occupies the small madrasah at the base of the Islam Khoja Minaret. It is one of the better museums in Itchan Kala, organised around the traditional crafts of Khorezm: hand-knotted carpets, embroidered suzanis, ikat silks, copper trays, silver jewellery, and the famous Khivan woodcarving (the same craft that produced the Juma Mosque columns).

Each cell of the madrasah houses a different category of object, with English labels of varying quality. Demonstrations are sometimes held in the courtyard. The combined ticket covers entry. Allow 30 to 45 minutes.
