Shirgiz Khan Medressa is one of Khiva's older Quran schools, built in 1718-1719 inside the old city. Tradition links its construction to captives brought back from a campaign to Meshed, a reminder that Khiva's architectural splendour was tied to a harsh khanate economy.
The medressa sits among the dense monuments of Itchan Kala, where even a short walk passes mosques, minarets, mausoleums, and old schools at close quarters.
