Dragon Bridge

The city's most dramatic piece of civil engineering: a six-lane road bridge built in the shape of a dragon, with the serpentine body forming the deck and the head — complete with scales and whiskers — cantilevering out over the east bank. At 666 metres it's one of the longest bridges in Vietnam.

On Friday and Saturday evenings at 9pm, the dragon breathes fire and water from its mouth in a brief spectacle that draws crowds to both banks. The effect is better from the Sơn Trà side (east bank). The older, more sedate Han River Bridge visible upstream is worth the short walk — it's a cable-stayed swing bridge that rotates 90 degrees to let river traffic through, the first rotating bridge built in Vietnam.

A story
The dragon is the totemic creature of Vietnamese culture — the country's mythological origin traces to a union between a dragon lord and a fairy — and Da Nang wanted something that would announce its post-war reinvention on the South China Sea. The bridge opened in 2013, its steel dragon body spanning 666 metres across the Han River, and immediately became the most-photographed structure in central Vietnam.
