Lady Buddha, Son Tra

The Linh Ứng Pagoda sits on a forested ledge on the western flank of the Sơn Trà Peninsula, about 10 km from the city centre. The white Lady Buddha (Phật Quan Âm) stands 67 metres tall — tall enough to be visible from most of the city and from boats far out at sea. Eighteen levels of balconies inside the statue are accessible to visitors.

The pagoda grounds are large and well-maintained, with ornamental gardens, smaller pavilions, and eighteen Bodhisattva statues lining the approach path. The view back across Da Nang Bay from the terrace is the best in the city. The road up through the Son Tra forest passes through dense jungle where red-shanked doucs — a brilliantly-coloured langur found almost nowhere else — can sometimes be spotted at dawn.

A story
The Son Tra peninsula was one of the most intensively monitored spots on earth during the Vietnam War — its summit hosted radar installations and signals intelligence equipment watching the Ho Chi Minh Trail. After reunification the hilltop was converted to a telecommunications relay station. In 2010 the Linh Ứng Pagoda was consecrated at the western foot of the mountain, and the 67-metre Lady Buddha statue — said to face the sea to protect fishermen from storms — was installed on a terrace looking out over Da Nang Bay.
