Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural

The world's longest ceramic mosaic, running 4km along the Red River dike

The Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural lines the outer wall of the Red River flood dike for nearly four kilometres, from the Long Bien Bridge area southwest along the dike roads of Tran Nhat Duat, Tran Quang Khai, and Au Co. Completed in 2010 for the millennial anniversary of Hanoi's founding, it holds a Guinness World Record as the world's longest ceramic mosaic. The mural was produced as a collaboration involving dozens of Vietnamese artists alongside international participants; the individual panels range from scenes of traditional village life and Vietnamese historical events to abstract sections and contributions from other countries.

The scale makes it impossible to take in at once — it's best seen by cycling or walking a section along the dike road, which gives views of the Red River on one side and the mosaic on the other. The stretches near Long Bien Bridge and around the Tran Nhat Duat area are among the best-preserved and most varied. Some sections have weathered and cracked over the fifteen years since installation; others remain vivid. The dike road itself is a pleasant cycling route on weekend mornings when traffic is reduced, and the combination of the mural, the river views, and the vegetable gardens on the Red River's sandy banks makes for a rewarding few hours.
