Nundle is a small village in the hills southeast of Tamworth, old enough and odd enough to be worth the detour. Gold was found at nearby Hanging Rock in 1852, and the village still trades on that mix of mining history, fossicking country, old buildings, and quiet New England scenery.
The day here is simple but satisfying. Start with the Nundle Woollen Mill, where working vintage machinery keeps the wool story tangible. Then look into the mining past at Mount Misery Gold Mine Museum before driving up to Hanging Rock Lookout for the view over the Peel River valley.
Nundle is not a place for a checklist of big sights. It is a village to take slowly, with a pub lunch, a bit of fossicking talk, and enough mountain air to make the road from Tamworth feel worthwhile.
