Currarong is a small South Coast village on the northern side of Jervis Bay, about 30 kilometres east of Nowra. It is not a big resort town, and that is part of the appeal: a strip of houses, a creek, rock pools, fishing boats, and low-key holiday shacks facing clear water.
The reason to come is the edge of the Beecroft Peninsula. From the village you can walk straight into Abrahams Bosom Reserve, where bush tracks lead to coves, sandstone shelves, the wreck of the Merimbula, and the strange crawl-through opening of Gosangs Tunnel. It is one of the better short walking areas on the Shoalhaven coast, especially if you like your beaches with a little rock-scrambling and sea-cliff drama.
South of town, the Defence-managed part of the peninsula opens to visitors when the Beecroft Weapons Range is not in use. That is where you find Point Perpendicular Lighthouse, set above the northern entrance to Jervis Bay. Check access before you drive out; the headland is worth the detour, but the gate is not always open.
