Goondiwindi

Queensland border town with river walks, cotton country, and the Gunsynd legend.

Goondiwindi is a Queensland border town on the Macintyre River, better as a half-day or overnight stop than as a destination you cross the country to see. It passes the World66 test because its anchors are genuinely local: the old customs point, the river border, cotton country, and the racehorse Gunsynd, still treated here like a civic hero.

The Customs House Museum is the best place to start, because it explains why the border mattered before Federation. From there, walk the Macintyre River Walk, detour to the Gunsynd Statue, and use the Botanic Gardens of the Western Woodlands for a quieter look at the inland landscape.

This is not a big-ticket town. It is a good one-day border stop with enough story to beat another anonymous highway break.
