Narrandera sits where big Riverina roads meet the Murrumbidgee River, and it could easily be only a fuel stop. Give it a few hours and it becomes more interesting: river red gums, wild koalas, water recreation, and a streak of country-town eccentricity.
The strongest reason to stop is the country along the river. The Narrandera Flora and Fauna Reserve is one of the better low-effort places in New South Wales to look for wild koalas, while Lake Talbot gives the town a summer swimming and picnic focus.
Narrandera also has a good eye for roadside theatre. The Water Tower Art turns a utility structure into a local landmark, and the Big Playable Guitar is exactly as odd as it sounds.
