Mount Isa is a mining city in far north-west Queensland, closer in spirit to the Northern Territory than to the beaches most travellers associate with the state. The mine stacks, dry hills, big roads, and furnace-like summer heat define the place. It is not pretty in the conventional sense, but it is memorable.
The city has enough substance for a real stop. Outback at Isa packages the mine tour, Riversleigh fossil story, visitor centre, and regional art in one useful complex. The Underground Hospital is stranger and more moving: a wartime civilian hospital dug into the hill after the bombing of Darwin. City Lookout gives the best view of mine, town, and outback.
Mount Isa rewards travellers who like places with a hard edge. Come in the cooler months if you can, and time it for the rodeo if you want to see the city at full volume.
