The Alpine Valleys wine region surrounds Bright and spreads through the Ovens and King valleys to the north and west — one of Australia's highest-altitude wine regions, producing lighter, more elegant styles than the warmer plains below. The King Valley in particular has become known for Italian varietals (prosecco, pinot grigio, sangiovese, barbera) introduced by Italian immigrant farmers who arrived in the tobacco-growing era and stayed to plant vines.
Several wineries offer cellar door tastings within easy reach of Bright. Notably: Pizzini Wines and Dal Zotto Estate in the King Valley (about 40 km north) are excellent for the Italian-style wines the region has become famous for. The sparkling prosecco from Dal Zotto is a benchmark for Australian prosecco. The King Valley is an easy day trip by car from Bright, combining cellar doors with a scenic drive through the tobacco-barn country.
