Mt Buffalo National Park

Mt Buffalo National Park sits 25 km west of Bright and rises to a broad granite plateau above 1,700 m. The plateau is covered in snowgum woodland and open heath, with dramatic granite formations, waterfalls, and sweeping views over the alpine valleys. The Cathedral and The Horn (the park's highest point at 1,723 m) are the most striking rock features.

The park has walks for all abilities, from short strolls to Lake Catani — a small alpine lake with a camping area and swimming in summer — to full-day scrambles across the plateau. In winter the park operates a small ski area. Wildflowers in November and December are exceptional, and the snowgums in their gnarled, windblown forms are striking at any time of year. The road up from the valley floor is a scenic drive in itself, with the alpine scenery unfolding as the hairpins climb.

A story
The Mt Buffalo plateau was called "Bungil" by the Taungurung people, meaning "a high, flat place." The national park was gazetted in 1898 — one of Victoria's oldest — after the mountain became popular with Victorian pastoralists who drove cattle to the high plains in summer. The stone huts they used still stand on the plateau.
