Murray to Mountains Rail Trail

Victoria's best rail trail runs 116 km between Wangaratta and Bright (with a branch to Beechworth), following the old railway line through the Ovens Valley on a sealed, traffic-free path with gentle gradients. The full trail takes two days to ride one-way, but the Bright end — from Porepunkah into town along the river — is an excellent half-day ride accessible from the town centre.

Bikes can be hired in Bright from several operators on Great Alpine Road. The trail passes through vineyards, farmland, and river flats with the Alps as backdrop. The section through Myrtleford is particularly scenic. Most riders do it point-to-point and arrange a shuttle back.

A story
The trail follows the bed of the Bright railway line, which closed to passengers in 1953 after the line was badly damaged by floods and the authorities chose not to repair it. Decades later, the sealed path that replaced it became one of Victoria's most popular recreational cycling routes.
