The Avon River runs along the western edge of town and the flat parkland along its banks — Avon Park — provides an easy, pleasant walk. In spring the wildflowers along the water's edge are at their best, and the river itself fills after winter rains to provide a green backdrop to the otherwise dry wheatbelt landscape.
The park is where the Avon Descent ends its 124-kilometre journey from Northam — if you are in York in August when the race is on, the riverbank near the finish is the best vantage point. On ordinary days it is simply a quiet place to walk after lunch, with good views back toward the town's historic buildings on the ridge above.
