The main street of York is among the best-preserved Victorian commercial streetscapes in Australia. Running along the eastern bank of the Avon River, Avon Terrace retains almost its entire stock of 19th and early 20th century buildings — sandstone facades, ornate verandahs, iron lacework, and Federation-era brickwork that was built to last and, remarkably, has lasted. The street contains the courthouse, the post office, two surviving bank buildings, the palace hotel, the town hall, and dozens of smaller commercial premises, nearly all of them still in original condition.
Walk from the northern end to the southern end and back on the other side of the road. It takes about 20 minutes at a brisk pace; allow an hour if you stop to read the heritage plaques.
