The York Courthouse Complex on Avon Terrace is considered one of the most significant heritage sites in Western Australia. Built in stages from 1852 to 1896, it incorporates the courthouse, police station, and lockup — a complete colonial justice precinct that has survived intact. The main courthouse building in dressed stone is the oldest part, while the later additions show how the town grew and its institutions expanded with it.
The complex is State Heritage listed and has been described by heritage authorities as an outstanding example of colonial public architecture. The adjacent police station and lockup are particularly evocative — the cells have been preserved in much their original state.
