Voskopojë

Voskopojë sits at 1,160 metres in the hills 20 km west of Korçë and is the most rewarding excursion from the city. Today it is a small mountain village of a few hundred people, but in the 18th century it was one of the largest and richest towns in the Balkans — an Aromanian (Vlach) cultural and trading centre.

Several churches survive from the great period, with extraordinary 18th-century frescoes: St Athanasius, St Nicholas, and St Michael are the most important. The Church of St Nicholas in particular has near-complete cycles by the master painter David Selenicasi. The drive up takes about 40 minutes; the road is paved but slow in winter snow.

A story
At its peak in the mid-18th century, Voskopojë (Moscopole) had a population of 30,000 — larger than Athens at the time — a printing press (one of the first in the Balkans), an academy, and 24 churches. It was sacked by Ottoman irregulars in 1769 and never recovered.
