Old docks redeveloped as the city's newest waterfront quarter — MAS, Red Star Line Museum

The "Little Island" — the area immediately north of the historic centre, around the old Bonaparte Dock and Willem Dock, redeveloped from the 1990s as a residential and cultural quarter. The MAS museum is the showpiece building. The Red Star Line Museum, in restored docks where two million emigrants boarded ships for America between 1873 and 1934, is the other major institution.

A weekly farmers' market runs at the Bonapartdok, and the area along the quays has a growing concentration of bars, restaurants, and boutique shops. The walk up from the centre takes about 25 minutes through quiet streets; tram 7 from Groenplaats also runs there.
