Café-lined square in front of the Cathedral — the Rubens statue at its centre

A large pedestrianised square between the Grote Markt and the Meir, ringed by café terraces and dominated by a 19th-century bronze statue of Rubens standing on a plinth in the centre. The square was built over the cathedral's old cemetery — the name means "Green Square" — and the Cathedral of Our Lady backs directly onto its northern edge.

This is one of the standard places to sit with a Bolleke in the late afternoon sun. The Hilton hotel takes up most of the south side; the cafés along the east and west sides have terraces that fill up whenever the weather is good. The square serves as the city's main pedestrian crossroads: the cathedral is steps away, the Grote Markt is just north, and the Meir shopping street begins from the north-east corner.
