Palace of Justice

Antwerp’s sail-roofed law courts, a bold Richard Rogers landmark on Bolivarplaats

Antwerp's Palace of Justice is one of the city's most striking modern buildings, nicknamed the Butterfly Palace for the repeating roof forms that rise over its courtrooms. Designed by the Richard Rogers Partnership with Arup and VK Studio, it brought a very different architectural language to the southern edge of the city centre.

You do not need a legal errand to appreciate it. The exterior and public approach from Bolivarplaats are the point for most travellers: steel, glass, stairs, tram lines, and those white sail-like roofs forming a civic landmark that divides opinion in the best architectural tradition.
