Royal Museum of Fine Arts — one of the great collections of Flemish painting

Address Leopold de Waelplaats 2, 2000 Antwerpen

The city's main art museum, reopened in 2022 after eleven years of renovation. The collection covers Flemish painting from the early masters — Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, Rogier van der Weyden — through Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaens, and the modern Belgian symbolists Ensor and Spilliaert. The renovation gutted and rebuilt the interior, adding a vast new white-cube wing behind the 19th-century facade, doubling the display space.

The Ensor rooms are particularly strong — Antwerp owns the largest collection of his work outside Ostend. Walk through chronologically and you have one of the best surveys of Flemish art anywhere. Allow at least three hours. Closed Mondays.
