The defining new building of contemporary Antwerp — a ten-storey red sandstone tower on the old harbour, opened in 2011, designed by the Dutch firm Neutelings Riedijk. The building's exterior staircase spirals around the outside of the building all the way to the roof terrace, where the view across the city and the port is the best in town. The roof is free and open every day, even when the museum is closed.
The collections inside cover the city's history as a port — global trade routes, the spice and diamond trades, life on the river. The Madonna gallery (sculptures of the Virgin from across the Catholic world) on level five is unusual and worth time. Each floor has its own focus and they work well visited separately. Closed Mondays.
